2001 Scholarship Winners
At the May 21st, 2001 meeting of the "Ole Virginia Hams" amateur radio club in Manassas, club President Jeff Poulin presented $1,000 scholarship checks to the following highly deserving individuals:
PLITT, Joshua D. - Stonewall High (GPA 4.100, 18 of 435)
Joshua, a licensed amateur radio operator, KD4TQX, is a superb, hard-driving student who has accomplished much in the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs at Stonewall. Termed exceptionally bright and highly motivated, Josh excels in mathematics and enjoys sharing his knowledge with others. The recipient of numerous achievement and civic awards, he has also volunteered countless hours of his time and various talents in the local community. Josh will explore both electrical and chemical engineering before deciding on a career path. Much to his credit, he has won acceptance into the University Honors Program at Virginia Tech. He will begin General Engineering studies at VT’s College of Engineering and is contemplating a Computer Science minor.
MARPLE, Larissa M. - Osbourn Park High (GPA 3.723, 38 of 425)
Larissa earned acceptance into several scholastic honor groups, including the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and the National Youth Leadership Conference. Larissa wins high praise from her Math teacher who awarded her an "A" in his computer math/QBASIC programming class. Computer programming is high on Larissa’s list of various hobbies. Larissa is also an accomplished musician; moreover, she has donated many hours of her time to the GIRL SCOUTS and various community organizations. She hopes to work with NASA after earning an engineering degree. Larissa has already won acceptance to the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech.
